Elon Musk’s company SpaceX is accepting Dogecoin as payment for its DOGE-1 mission, which is scheduled to take place in the first quarter of 2022.
Geometric Energy Corporation (GEC) has announced that it has paid SpaceX for the first commercial lunar payload in Dogecoin (DOGE).
In the announcement, the canadian company said : „As part of Geometric Energy Corporation’s DOGE-1 mission to the Moon, Geometric Space Corporation’s (GSC) mission management is working with SpaceX to commission a 40-kilogram Cubesat as a “ride” on a Falcon 9 lunar payload mission in the first quarter of 2022. The payload is to gain information about the lunar environment via sensors and cameras on board with integrated communication and computing systems.“
Samuel Reid, Managing Director of Geometric Energy, said that they had strengthened DOGE’s presence as a means of payment for moon transactions in the space sector by using Dogecoin for this transaction.
Tom Ochinero, deputy head of commercial sales at SpaceX, said that they were looking forward to launching the DOGE-1 moon mission. In addition, he believes that the mission demonstrates the use of cryptocurrencies beyond Earth’s orbit and lays the foundation for interplanetary trade.
SpaceX is led by billion-dollar inventor Elon Musk. The SpaceX CEO has always been a fan of Dogecoin. The cryptocurrency owes its hundreds of percent profits, which it has recorded since the beginning of the year, not least to its support.
According to the press release, the two companies stated that the transaction was proof of the speed, reliability and cryptographic security of the cryptocurrency DOGE, which works where traditional banks cannot. They added that Dogecoin was sophisticated enough to fully fund a commercial lunar mission and had therefore been selected as a means of payment for all lunar transactions between SpaceX and Geometric Energy Corporation.
Dogecoin has developed superbly in recent weeks, reaching a new all-time high above the 0.70 US dollar mark. Since Elon Musk’s appearance on the show „Saturday Night Live“however, the Dogecoin price fell over the weekend.
